5Love it!  Mar 02, 2010
By Ayana G. Reddick
This book was exactly what I needed!
I am not yet a Vegan - and I was hesitant to become one. Besides the fact that I will miss my favorite foods: cheese, ice cream, milkshakes...I also had reservations about the diet itself. I have seen a quite few Vegans who were malnourished-looking. Without meat or dairy, I thought, of course they are malnourished!

But of course I was wrong. For one thing Sister Afya is herself a Vegan - and she is certainly not malnourished (looking or otherwise). For another, there are plenty of sources of calcium and protein without having to resort to animal flesh and secretions. <- Gross, that statement alone will make me become a Vegan!

But, actually, her book is not condescending at all to us meat eaters. She advises people not to try to stop Cold Turkey. But to gradually cut things out of our diet.

She spends a lot of time, educating readers on the correct way to be a Vegan - what foods to avoid and what to make sure you include in every meal (60+ pages!)

But this does not at all mean that she skimps on the recipes. She has lots of recipes in here (including *2* brownie recipes) yum!

Here is the breakdown:

Breakfast recipes: 8
Soups: 4
Salads: 6
(I know what you are thinking: of course salads are vegan - why do I need a recipe for them? - well, she has some great ideas for new salads to try)
Main Dishes: 10
Sides: 19
Breads: 7
Desserts: 8
Beverages: 6
Sauces and Dips: 3

As you can see, she generous with the recipes!

But that is not all! After all the recipes, she STILL includes more info like meal planning, substitution basics AND a DVD on cooking with TOFU.

This book is WELL worth every penny I spent on it! I can't wait till she writes more books. I will be the first in line to purchase them!

5A beautiful keep  Jun 25, 2009
By Derek Moten
I purchased the book in brooklyn for my wife, who follows the authors works. My wife and I also attended a book signing that same day, and i have to say. I am a huge meat eater, but if veggies and other non meat meals were prepared as flavorfull and zesty as the greens that were made live by the author, i'd be more than pleased to immediately transform my eating habits. The author also gave detailed health tips and infoon where to get any and all ingredients to prepare all of the meals in the book. And as an added bonus, a dvd is included. This book is a guide to a vegan lifestyle you can beleive in. its not just the average tofu book, but truly a blend of culture and healthy consciousness created to educate and satisfy your craving for culinary delights. It will definately help switch from savage eater to health wise human.

5Recipes to please anyone's palate  Apr 17, 2009
By K. Wardstrom
VSG is such a great resource for anyone, but even better for vegans. With sample menus, how to cook grains and beans, finger licking recipes, sample shopping list, info on health and wellness and the politics behind our food, this concise book is not short on knowledge. The recipes are so good that you can wow all the vegans, vegetarians, or meat eaters in your life for little cash or time spent.

5One of my faves  Jan 11, 2011
By d9star
I have read many vegan cookbooks and this is by far one of the best. Easy to read and understand, great recipes that are not at all complicated to make- you can start cooking as soon as you get the book. Plus it has lots of other info on being vegan that other cookbooks lack, all in one guide that is just the perfect size. Excellent buy!
