3Works well, with some inconvenience  Nov 16, 2011
By David Johnson
I bought this fryer a few years ago specifically to fry a Thanksgiving turkey and it worked well for that. The following year, I brought it in to work for a turkey fry we were doing and that gave me the opportunity to compare it with the fryers a couple of other people brought in. I will address individual aspects of it below:

COOKING A TURKEY
If you are just looking for a simple kit to deep-fry your turkey, this will do the job. It will fit a turkey up to 18 pounds, it comes with a thermometer that mounts through the lid, and it comes with the turkey mounting hook and a handle for putting the turkey in and out of the oil. Other than the oil and propane, this is a complete setup for frying a turkey.

ELECTRIC TIMER
I suppose this is a safety feature so that you don't walk away and forget that the flame is on. It requires you to press a button every 15 minutes or it turns off the gas. This can also be a pain and if it is cold outside it prevents you from just watching it through a window. I wish they had included a bypass kit to take it out if you don't want it. I also tried bypassing it on my own, but the pipe is an odd size (perhaps metric?) so you can't get an adapter at the local hardware store.

REGULATOR
It is a 5psi regulator, and with that gas flow it takes about an hour to get the oil up to temperature. I wish it was a 10psi regulator. With the 5psi regulator, I find that I just end up leaving it all the way open all the time, so it becomes just an on/off valve instead of an actual regulator.

NO BASKET
Once you have the oil all heated up, there are infinite possibilities for other things you can deep-fry after the turkey is done (stuffing balls, sweet potato fries, etc.) but this kit does not come with a basket, so you can't fry anything else unless you have some means of putting it in and out. I just ordered Masterbuilt TKBSK Aluminum Turkey Basket for Fryers and I can't wait to fry things other than just a turkey this year.

BUILD QUALITY
I have had it three years, and have never had a problem with it in terms of stability or build quality. That being said, some of the other ones that my co-workers have seem to be more sturdy with more solid legs, thicker pots, etc. If I had it to do over, I might have spent a little more to get a more sturdy kit.

OVERALL
I will probably keep using this fryer for a few more years, but I must confess that I have a little bit of buyers remorse because it is not the most sturdy setup, it didn't come with a basket, and it has that inconvenient timer. By the time you add together the cost of this fryer kit with the basket, you might as well spend just a little bit more and get a better kit unless you are only going to use it for turkey.

4Get the job done, but use caution!!  Dec 15, 2011
By jerryattrick
For the price, this unit does an admirable job of cooking a turkey. We cooked a
14 pound turkey for Thanksgiving, and it was delicious. A good brine mixture to
soak the bird in really helps to enhance the flavor. Yes, the previous poster
was right when he complained about the long heat up times, but it does hold the
temperature fine, once it gets there. This unit will get the job done, but you really
have to be careful when deep frying a turkey. Extreme care is needed to make sure
that the bird is not frozen, and is completely dry. Cooking oil, fire, and water make
for a hazardous situation. We cooked the turkey for 20 minutes in the oven first just
to make sure that there was no liquids to cause the oil to boil over.

1Don't buy it, it is poorly made.  Nov 20, 2011
By Jimmy "Jimmy"
Well I cant give this a full review because I did not actually fry a turkey in it.
I a returning it because it is very low quality. It is very thin aluminum, the bottom of the pot buckles.
Also the lid is too small for the pot, almost a 1/4 inch difference in the pot and lid diameters.
When I took it new out of the Box, despite a lot of packing material, both the Pot and Lid were bent and dented.
Returning it to Amazon and spending more for a better fryer.
