4mostly great pan  Jul 17, 2008
By ResearchingMom
Basically I love this pan. I long ago ditched the poisonous non-stick coatings, and am now replacing my Stainless steel and bare cast iron to avoid leeching metals. I love a heavy pan, it cooks much better than the tri-ply SS it is replacing and at a lower setting, and cleans up beautifully with a brief soak. I love the light interior -it is bright white, so I can see the food. The Chianti color is lovely, and fortunately not brown toned. I am careful to avoid temperature shock.
I'm glad the other reviewer suggested the Mario Batali silicone HANDLE GRIP that matches this, too.
The one caveat is that the interior is kind of uneven, rippled, almost lumpy, as if it was being cut by hand and they didn't quite finish before they applied the enamel.
The leaflet says "Your Mario Batali Cast Iron Cookware has been uniquely hand-cast from molten iron in individual sand molds and layered with three coats of high quality enamel. Each piece is then baked at extremely high temperatures to seal the enamel coating and create the high gloss finish."
I called COPCO, who makes these, and they reiterated that these are hand made and unique, but that if I thought there was a problem I could return it for a replacement.
I'm really not sure whether this is a defective one or just the way the Mario Batali pans are. I didn't see anything about this in any other reviews. If anyone else has one and can comment I'd really appreciate it, especially before my 30 days are up!
It unfortunately gives the interior more of an amateurish look than a handcrafted one. A helper handle would also have been nice.

5Lid from Risotto pan fits the Saute pan!!  Apr 11, 2008
By Kmarlec
After doing lots of research, I chose this pan because of the price and the style. The handle gets hot of course, but that's because you can also put the skillet in the oven to broil! You will need to use a SILICONE HANDLE GRIP for the handle -- Amazon has those, too! The BEST thing is that the LID from the 4 quart MB Risotto pot fits this saute pan, which I love. I can then use the saute pan (with Risotto lid) to brown and braise! Interchangable lids are awesome.

3Great pan, very poor enamel  Jul 01, 2011
By P. B. Ellis
We loved this pan, loved the cast iron even heat, but the enamel crazed not long after we got it, and after 2-3 years, the enamel started chipping up, and we had to discard what had been our favorite saute pan. We have lots of Le Crueset, know to be careful of how we treat a non-metalic surface, but wound up very disappointed. We would have given it one star because of the very short life, but we loved this pan so much while we used it, that we have to give it three stars.

5Good for the price.  Aug 09, 2010
By A. Diaz "L. Tolentino"
I returned mine because the interior enamel had some flaws (little holes) and I've never seen that in the french brand but if you don't want to spend a fortune on a cast iron skillet this is good enough. The chianti color is a brownish red not true red as someone else said. I didn't like the color.

5Red Hot!  Jul 08, 2010

This Batali skillet was a gift to my Mom. Although she had no idea who Batali was she loved the skillet! It is the only one in the marketplace that I could find that had a white enamel inside which is exactly what she wanted. Her original enameled (white inside) cast iron skillet lasted more than 30 years - with its thick enamel coating this Batali one looks to last another 30!
