If you like to make Moroccan food, this is an essential item Jan 06, 2011
By Timothy B. Riley I have enjoyed Moroccan food for many years and have recently received a tagine pot for Christmas. As I started to build a Moroccan pantry I knew that there were a few item that were essential. This included preserved lemons, Ras el Hanout spice blend and a Harissa paste. I found this one on Amazon and even though it seemed a little pricey I ordered a couple of jars. Here is my take on it:
Zamouri's Harissa Chili Paste has an obvious red pepper flavor and is medium low to medium heat (depending on your taste). Although the peppers are not identified on the label I am guessing New Mexican red and cayenne (this product is made in the US, by the way). Still, the chilies are not overwhelming and several exotic flavors come through. The first thing that I tasted was cumin although it is not specifically mentioned on the label. Here are the listed ingredients:
Fresh Chili Peppers, Crushed Red Peppers, Salt, Preserved Lemons, Garlic, Paprika, Olive Oil, Vinegar, Water, and other spices.
I have to be honest and say that I am certain that when I visit a African grocery store I will be able to find a similar blend at a fraction of the price. However, if that is not an option for you this blend is authentic and very, very flavorful.

Recent fan of Moroccan recipes Sep 12, 2011
By Tina P, Eliz City, NC This is my first time with Moroccan spices. I had this recipe I wanted to try which called for Harissa paste, so I ordered a jar. I cannot compare this brand to others, since it is the only one I have tried, but the results were excellent. I have since used it to spice up beef tenderloins, again, yummy..... I don't think I need to shop around for any other brands on the market, since I am completely satisfied with this one..

This harissa is pretty good. But it is way behind Mustapha's harrisa in terms of flavor. But right now, you cant seem to get Mustapha's online. So this is definitely the next best option.

This stuff is fabulous! I have ordered several spices from these folks on Amazon, and couldn't be happier! Each transaction has been perfect.

Not Pleased Dec 14, 2011
By fudie Wasn't pleased with this harissa sauce. It's very bitter and doesn't have the bold flavor I was looking for. Tried it once with a moroccan chicken dish and I haven't used it since. It's also too salty for my taste. I wouldn't recommend it.
