Description:

A versatile and handy 4 quart stock pot with steamer insert. Columbian's technology for applying porcelain creates a durable, chip resistant product that will last most families a lifetime. The glass-like surface does not interact with or alter the taste of food, and even the most stubborn foods clean up easily. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won’t burn and resists staining. It’s also non -porous so it won’t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove.

1Not as wonderful as I had hoped  Jun 22, 2010
By Kathy Skaggs
I bought this steamer to replace a similar one I'd had for probably 15 years. I LOVED my old steamer. Unfortunately, the outer pan in my old steamer developed a tiny leak. This steamer looked like the same one so, despite Mike's bad review, I decided to buy it. Fortunately for me, the outer pan is fine, not unlike the one I'm replacing. My old steamer insert fits so I decided to keep it. The problem is the so-called "steamer insert." My old steamer had a colander-like granite ware pan that fit down inside the steamer, about an inch from the bottom and riding snugly on the top of the pan. The "steamer insert" that came with this pan is not as wide as the pan, so if you put it in the pan, it just sits on the bottom of the pan. It's also only a couple inches high. I'm not sure how you could use it. Even if it were wider, you could only put about a cup of veggies in it. And if you put it on the bottom of the pan, you might as well just boil your vegetables. I can't figure out what they were thinking. Anyway, unless you're in a situation like mine, where you already have the insert, I wouldn't buy this product.

1JUNK  Feb 01, 2010

No chemical coating? whatever they are using it melted on to my burners while simmering a stew. damn thing ruined my dinner, and filled the house with smoke. No i did not burn the food, the pot melted, on low no less. This is crap.

5Great for SunOven  Feb 08, 2012
By Desert Otter
This is the perfect set for a SunOven. The set works well to cook chicken, meats and beans. I use the insert, placed upside down in the pot, to keep the small whole chicken from drowning in drippings. In a few hours, the pot yields well done meats, chicken and beans when used in conjunction with the SunOven. Global Sun Oven - Solar Cooker

4Solar cooking pot  Jul 26, 2010
By Matthew A. Macclary
I just got this pot for use in a solar cooking project. It is black and the right size. It worked fine for me the first time out.

Comments to other reviewers: Mike, the pot says on the packaging to not cook with less than 1" of liquid in the pot for heat transfer. Perhaps if the liquid boils off while you are cooking, then the pan will weld to the burner?!

Kathy, I plan to try the steamer insert soon. I think that you need to put it in with the holes up so that it doesn't sit flush to the bottom of the pan. If you are steaming small stuff that can fall around the edges of the steamer insert, then maybe try putting a metal measuring cup in the pan as a spacer and then drop the insert in hole side down. Just a thought...
