Lots of bells & whistles but room for improvement May 05, 2010

I've had this rice/oatmeal/slow cooker now for 6 months. This machine cooks all kinds of rice extremely well and that's what it primarily was designed to do. You can cook sushi, brown, risotto, etc. rices and they turn out perfect. They also stay warm and perfectly moist if you need to set the keep warm function. The parts remove easily for cleaning.
The easy to read display doesn't tell you how many minutes it will take to cook your rice choice. You have to read through the instruction booklet to find out how long each cycle is. A countdown function of remaining time would have been really nice. The first time I made brown rice my family waited almost 2 hours to eat dinner.
This machine doesn't do the extra stuff very well. I made 1 cup of steel cut (Irish) oatmeal with 2 cups of water in a machine designed to hold 8 cups of water. The frothy water boiled over, out of the steam hole, and into the electronics board. It fried the circuit board. Fortunately the unit comes with a 3 years, no questions asked warranty. Cuisinart sent me a replacement unit for $10 shipping/handling.
The slow cooker function runs on the equivalent of "high" temperature for a slow cooker. They don't tell you that in the user manual. When you use the unit on slow cooker, the first 10 minutes of the cycle sautes whatever you put in the pan. This is useful if you need to brown meat or onions.
I love Cuisinart but this one doesn't live up to the usual quality of Cuisinart products. I have the machine and will use it 'till it dies, but I don't know if I would buy another.

I like this item for one very important reason, it cooks with little guesswork on my part. As a professional chef it's an easy setup and go cooking method and I really didn't need to use the directions. I have noticed that a few review said that their rice cooking times seemed very long. On average cooking uncooked long grain or short grain brown rice does take some time. We are accustomed to having pre-done rice or minute rice, and cooking quality, healthy rice is simply not the same.

Introducing the Rice Plus(tm) Multi-Cooker, the first product from Cuisinart with advanced fuzzy logic technology. This built-in "brain" senses fluctuations in cooking and automatically adjusts operation to ensure perfect results. With pre-programmed settings for six types of rice, plus oatmeal, soup, steam, slow cooking, and more - and easy dishwasher cleanup - this is destined to become a favorite.
I've used it's many settings from cooking rice to making bean soup and everything has turned out perfect. I love it for cooking my brown rice. I simply add the rice, fill to the water level on the side based upon rice added and set it for brown rice and it's done in about 1.5 hrs. Quick cooking is not necessarily the best for you even though it may be the simplest method of getting food to the table. If you want to eat healthy then you need to cook and prepare properly and this little cooker does the job. The interior wipes clean and the bowl for rice is easy to wash and wipe clean and the steaming insert just needs a quick rinse and you are ready to cook again. It doesn't take up much counter space and I've kept it right by the sink to extend the faucet nozzle right into the cooker after adding rice to make the filling process that much simplistic. Lastly the nicest feature is the keep warm setting that allows you to hold the rice in the cooker without overcooking and turning to mush.
I did go back and spend some time on the directions after the initial setup and cooking and I must admit it is confusing and I could see how the common user would really have some difficulty in figuring out the cooking times and buttons. I give this rice cooker four stars for the quality of cooking and ease of setup, cleanup and service it offers but not five stars due to the complexity of the instruction manual. I think the steps and instructions could be written a little clearly and more towards the average consumer.
Just remember that quality cooking is more tan throwing food together it's spending the time to create and bring out the best in your food. Do spend some time on the instruction manual if you are used to cooking minute of fast rice, because if you simply put rice in to cook 15 minutes before the rest of you meal is complete you will be waiting for your rice to complete the meal.

Great for anything that is not rice. Mar 15, 2011

We had done quite a bit of research on Amazon before buying this (anyway, it's a Cuisinart!) and were REALLY looking forward to trying it. How is it? It's fine for slow cooking. But you don't need a Cuisinart for slow cooking. And rice?
What a disappointment. This rice cooker is a little fuzzy on how best to cook rice. White rice is a pasty clump. Wild rice is, well, I'm eating some right now, and the best way to describe it is a battlefield of exploded, shriveled meal worms. It's impossible not to overcook. We are people who tend to blame ourselves first, so we assumed we were just "doing it wrong". (Never mind the fact that one reason we got a rice cooker was so that it would be impossible to "do wrong".) So we tried everything: different settings, experimenting with the water level, using filtered water, not using the self-warmer after cooking, trying different kinds/brands of rice. Nothing works. It got to the point where I actually brought my plate over to the computer desk one night so I could write a review on Amazon while the bitter disappointment was fresh in my mouth, co-mingling with the dead-worm wild rice.
We've had this stinker a year, so we're stuck with it now. You still have a choice.

Neat Idea but.... Jan 17, 2010
By loud This thing is a little on the pricey side. This is the first one of these I have ever had so I don't know if the other cheaper ones are any better. Got this for my wife who is vegetarian and thought it might help her with her meals and cooking. She seems to like it ok so far. The directions are not always real clear and the included recipes could use a little help. They are not always clear or real accurate. It pays to experiment with seasonings. It does do rice well though. After fiddling with some of the recipes in the included book she got those to come out pretty well. One recipe though had you still adding ingredients when it thought that the cooking was done. Not good. Clean up is easy.

Rice Cooker takes time Mar 27, 2011
By Ackerman This is a great rice cooker if you have time. After we purchased this we discovered the Cuisinart Pressure cooker that cooks great rice in 20 minutes. This rice cooker takes 1 hr and 45 minutes for brown rice. We have two small children and don't always have time to plan a healthy meal. The rice is great and we have been making a lot at once and then reheat for additional meals, however, if you don't have time get the pressure cooker.
